When to use Present Perfect Tense?

We used this tense in the following ways:

  • We used this tense to express an action that has recently been completed.

For Examples:

  1. I have bought a car.
  2. He has came now. 
  3. I have purchased a book.
  • To describe a past action or event whose effects still exist. 

For Examples:

  1. You have done a good work.
  2. She has left the house. 
  3. I have finished my dinner and now I am going to bed. 

In the present perfect tense time is not important. 

How can we use present perfect tense? 

Present Perfect Tense Affirmative, Negative, Interrogative sentences 

Present Perfect Tense affirmative sentences formula

Subject + have/has + V3 (third form of verb) + Object. 

Present Perfect Tense affirmative sentence examples:

  • He has done it. 
  • I have called him. 
  • The police have caught a thief. 
  • I have gone to school. 
  • She has completed her homework. 

Present Perfect Pense negative sentence structure

Subject + has/have + not + V3 (third form of verb) + Object

Examples of Present Perfect Tense negative sentence:

  • I have not gone to school. 
  • I have not called him. 
  • He has not done it. 
  • She has not completed her homework. 
  • The train has not left the station. 

Present Perfect Tense interrogative formula

Has/have + Subject + V3 (third form of verb) + Object? 

Or

Question word + has//have + Subject + V3 (third form of verb) + Object? 

Present Perfect Tense interrogative sentences examples:

  • Has he gone to school? 
  • Have you done it? 
  • When have you come? 
  • Why have you called her? 
  • Have they not seen the Taj Mahal? 

When to use past tense and present perfect tense?

Both tenses (past tense and present perfect tense) are used to talk about things that happened in the past. The only difference is that we mention time for a finish action in the past tense. But in the present perfect tense we focus on the action and not on the time.

Examples:

Simple Past Present Perfect
I closed the shop at 10 pm. I have closed the shop.
He brought a car last month. He has bought a car.
My father built this house in 2019. My father has built this hose.
We played cricket yesterday. We have played cricket.
We won the match last year. We have won the match.
