Rules of Past Indefinite Tense with examples: Hello students, welcome once again. We have read earlier that there are three types of tenses. And each of them has four forms. I have written a post on 12 types of tenses with examples and formula previously. There we discussed all the tenses. But today we will talk about 'Rules of Past Indefinite Tense' and also its interrogative and negative form in detail. 

Past Indefinite Tense or Simple Past Tense is one of the most important topics in English grammar. We use this tense very much. Let's have a look at the rules of past indefinite tense and its examples.

Uses of Past Indefinite Tense 

We use this tense to talk about:
  • A completed action in the past.
Rules of Past Indefinite Tense with examples

Past Indefinite Tense Affirmative Sentences 

We write this tense: Subject + V2 (second form of verb) + Object

For Examples:

  • My grandfather built this house in 1960.
  • I read the book yesterday. 
  • He did his work. 
  • She went to school. 
  • I played cricket with my friends. 

Past Indefinite Tense Negative Rules

We write this tense: Subject + did not + V1 (first form of verb) + Object. 

Example of Past Indefinite Negative Sentences:

  • He did not do it. 
  • I did not go to office yesterday. 
  • She did not sweep the room. 
  • He did not give me the book. 
  • She did not love me. 

Past Indefinite Tense Interrogative Rules

Affirmative sentences are used to ask question. 

Remember Interrogative sentence always ends with 'Question mark (?)'. 

Past Indefinite Tense Interrogative formula

We write it: 

Did + Subject + V1 (first form of verb) + Object. 

Or

Question word + did + Subject + V1 (first form of verb) + Object. 

Examples of Past Indefinite Tense Interrogative sentence

  • Did he go to school? 
  • Why did she tell lie? 
  • Where did you read? 
  • Did you see him? 
  • What did What did you think about this? 

Simple Past Tense Interrogative Negative Sentences 

We write it: Did + Subject + not + V1 (first form of verb) + Object. 

Examples of Simple Past Tense Interrogative Negative Sentence:

  • Did he not play football? 
  • Did you not read the book? 
  • Did she not sleep at night? 
  • Did you not go to office yesterday? 
  • Did I not do it?
